Hey there awesome people, what do you guys think about the route that goes outside the tunnels? Grim story time (readers discretion is adviced) : I once met a moose and two of her calves just around the curve between Slepended and Billingstad going in the opposite direction. It did not go so well for one of them, as it turned and ran back across the tracks after they were blocked by the fence. I clipped the back half of it with a Class 69 C train, and it went spinning in the middle of the track as the Local Service in the opposite direction came... Thankfully it did not suffer for long. A major double hit.
Ouch! Yeah... it's a part of reality, unfortunately. As you well may know, those who work the Røros- and Nordland lines have (or at least had... there were some legality issues with that, I seem to remember from the news a while ago) a big game rifle in the cab for this very reason, due to them both running through areas that are inaccessible from the road for people from "viltnemda", should something occur. And occur it does indeed, unfortunately.
At least the local scavengers were happy... I drove up to the summer cabin and there was a flock of birds on the side of the road... their buffet still had red in it so it was fresh.
2:57:46 That's a great view of the rotary converter station at Nordagutu! For those who don't know, the electrified portion of the Norwegian railway network (as well as Sweden, Germany, Switzerland etc.) uses a 16 2/3 Hz electrical grid rather than the 50 Hz of the "normal" grid. So much of the rail network in Norway uses giant motor generator sets hidden in the mountain to "mechanically" convert the power from 50 Hz to 16 2/3 Hz (by using a motor connected to a generator with 1/3 the number of poles). These old rotary converters are being replaced by modern ones using power electronics many places, but they will remain in use on more rural lines. Luckily, they can run for 100 years if well looked after, really fascinating technology.
I was wondering about some of the 'stations' along the line, like at Mjøfjell... wasn't sure if they were hydro stations fed by pipes from further up in the mountains (as a few in the USA are). Thanks for pointing that out!
@@Renville80 Thanks! I've been lucky enough to get a tour of one of these converter stations myself, and they really are like power stations, except that they are powered by electricity in the first place... Search for "roterende omformer"on google if you want to see pictures of what these things look like. The coolest part is that the rotary converters themselves and their assosiated equipment (transformers, switches, control systems etc.) are mounted on railway cars, so they can be replaced or moved quickly, at least in theory. That is why most of these converter stations have railway tracks going into them, as this equipment is rolled into two separate tunnels. This system was designed during the 50's in the cold war, so the quick replacement of the converters and protection from the mountains were essensial to keep the electrified rail network running even in the event of a Soviet attack.

Although the train was two hours delayed (not only a problem in Germany 😂😂😂), it was so stunning. I am a train driver myself (local traffic in Germany) and always a little jealous when I watch your videos because of the incredible landscape you're driving through. What a magnificent marathon! I have had to come to this video late in the day as I was away when it went live and I wanted to allocate the time to watch it all through in one go -- after all RCG couldn't break off in the middle! So I have "done" D 4122 LYS and ended just beyond the decomissioned 601 ALB. (I can't think that a standard main/distant combination at the entrance to a yard like Alnabru has any relevance to be a functional signal, when you will always proceed on the shunting signals from that point, in any case.) Beautiful photography, with some wonderful effects -- mist, rain, sunrise -- this video had them all. And a small deer escaping across the track just in time. Thank you so much.
Lovely is lovely gets. These Summer nighttime rides are so full of mystery and mist and dreams. The icing on the cake this time is the really rainy section that starts at 1:20:00 … just as good as catching a pounding blizzard!

"D4122 LYS" Hello RailCowGirl, and Thank You for posting these stunning videos of your journeys! What a job, I'm jealous must be a wonderful career to have to be able to see all that beautiful country and get paid for working. I love your videos and I find them very soothing kind of like a meditation. And I thank you for not embedding any audio files I find 90% of the audio files that RUclipsrs post in their videos not only are they totally annoying but I never watch them for more than a minute or two before I'm turning them off. So thank you again I really enjoy relaxing to your videos. FYI, I'm from the USA when I was younger I had a huge HO railroad layout, I hand laid all the tracks and created the scenery and I attempted to make it look very similar to the scenery that you are showing us in your videos. Absolutely Beautiful thank you again!
Hi, I think it was an advantage playing the last two in reverse order to give continuous coverage. Where do they still use the class 69's that were parked at Høyen and between Lysaker and Skøyen?
This is a long time in the cab, did I miss a 45 min. out of cab interval along the way? Or do freight drivers have slightly different length of time limits?
I can just about smell the moisture laden air full of the wonderful smell of vegetation. Just seen my first owl making a hasty exit to your left between Grovane and Oggevatn.
Har sett at det er 60 km/h i avvik over søndre sporveksel på Vestfossen. Så ikke noe likedant ved utkjør på nordre sporveksel der. Er det 40 km/h ved kjøring over avvik i nordre sporveksel?
D4122 LYS - I watched an a couple different stints, and probably dozed off during some good parts, but I did catch your message for this Easter egg. 😊 I too enjoy the midsummer night rides. I hope someday to get to Norway to enjoy all its seasons. Thank you for the inspiration!
What does the sign on signal D4122 LYS indicate? Presumably, LYS is for Lysaker. Does 4122 indicate the distance in kilometres from a certain starting point, perhaps 41.22km? And what about the D? Is that a type of signal?
D4122 LYS. Glad to see you're back...and better than ever! These were two long and beautiful trips through some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. As a retired railroad Signal Engineer I'm still fascinated by your signal/train control system. Listening to the way you handle that air brake, it's obvious you have a lot of stamina. Good job!
I think that you are extremely luck to have a job which allows you to enjoy the scenery and weather throughout the year, including wonderful sun rises. Thanks for posting. D 4122 LYS
Interesting journey - thank you. Shame about the cloud and rain, I would have liked to see the mid-summer Norwegian sky between midnight an 3 AM. Very long journey, perhaps 6 hours for you to include where you were stopped for passing traffic. Do you not get a break? Is there no rule about hours of duty without a break? It took me several days to view this journey - many breaks for me! Thanks again.

great to be riding with you again! I see we're sitting on the left side of the cab, instead of on the right or in the middle. Really appreciate all the extra work you put in (chapterization etc). I'm now heading for Vennesla, with a nice long journey on the other side. Cheers!

Around 5:15, as the train passes through Alnabru yard, there are stacks of concrete tunnel lining segments just to the right, in the area where containers are stored. These segments are often used in rail transit projects. Do you know what project those are for? I also noticed signal D4122 LYS.

Ja, det var helt utrolig at det sist skulle ende med feil på minnekortet etter Gvarv, det var så utrolig nedtur. LOL, men nå er det endelig på plass, så får jeg også håpe på at det blir flere turer :D
Me again !! D4122 LYS
Hi, I think it was an advantage playing the last two in reverse order to give continuous coverage.
Where do they still use the class 69's that were parked at Høyen and between Lysaker and Skøyen?
D4122 LYS Shama laba ding dong.

First! Whoop whoop! :D
This is a long time in the cab, did I miss a 45 min. out of cab interval along the way? Or do freight drivers have slightly different length of time limits?
5 1/2 hours consecutive. Same for any train operator
@@RailCowGirl Thank you, I got it in my head it was an 4 1/2 hour limit
@@longbow8425 nope 5 1/2. for road traffic it is 4 1/2.
D4122LYS. Thanks for the ride!

Yaaay! You made it! 🎉🎉🎉
@@RailCowGirlThank you for an exelent video!😁
I can just about smell the moisture laden air full of the wonderful smell of vegetation. Just seen my first owl making a hasty exit to your left between Grovane and Oggevatn.
Thanks for watching!

3:19:24 What a view!
I arrive to the D4122 LYS point. Great trip, thanks for this gift 😀

So do you skydive to offset the routine of operating a train, or do you drive trains to offset the PTSD from skydiving?
Har sett at det er 60 km/h i avvik over søndre sporveksel på Vestfossen. Så ikke noe likedant ved utkjør på nordre sporveksel der. Er det 40 km/h ved kjøring over avvik i nordre sporveksel?
Great adventure. D4122LYS. Love riding the train with you through the beautiful country of Norway😊❤
So glad you enjoy it :D Congratulation for reaching Lysaker :D What do you think of the ride outside the tunnels? :D
D4122 LYS - I watched an a couple different stints, and probably dozed off during some good parts, but I did catch your message for this Easter egg. 😊
I too enjoy the midsummer night rides. I hope someday to get to Norway to enjoy all its seasons. Thank you for the inspiration!
But you made it to Lysaker :D Woohoo! :D Thank you so much for watching :D
D4122 LYS Many Thanks jb
❤️
Always a gem of a video from RCG! We haven't been on the old Drammen line for a loong time.
What does the sign on signal D4122 LYS indicate? Presumably, LYS is for Lysaker. Does 4122 indicate the distance in kilometres from a certain starting point, perhaps 41.22km? And what about the D? Is that a type of signal?
@@ians7980 all of this has been explained in my newsletter The Monthly Moo. :)
Good job!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
D4122LYS Nice to see the south in summer. I know what you mean about “out of focus”, when I drive all night my eyes shut when the sun comes up.
Thank you for watching all the way :D What do you think about the diversion around the tunnels? :D
It seems you are getting major lens flare off bright lights -- or is that the window?
Very nice. We work to someday see views like this. You see views like this at work.
Yep, I do. Again, I work to see sights other places :)
👍
I think that you are extremely luck to have a job which allows you to enjoy the scenery and weather throughout the year, including wonderful sun rises. Thanks for posting. D 4122 LYS
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
D4122 LYS - you're a perfect companion for my morning elliptical. This video took several days to work through but great ride all the way!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@Deepak-wr9pt there are rules, and it is 5 1/2 hours consecutive active operation. A shift can be up to 16h if it is split in two with rest between. Maximum amount of active operation is 10h in total in a shift.

An enjoyable trip, brilliant sunrise over the hills (prefer mine out of the sea, but that's due to where I lived). Interesting seeing the changes at Drammen.
Thanks, glad you liked it 😊
Another great train video! I really enjoy seeing the different lines in the rail system as well and other parts of Norway. It;s truly a beautiful country! Thanks for the video, D4122LVS
Thank you for watching all the way to Main Entry Signal Delta 4 1 2 2 Lima Yankee Sierra :D
6:09 Ser det er lys utenfor huset hvor jeg vokste opp. Velkommen hjem, forresten.
Tusen takk :D
Thanks for another great video. Took several days to watch but made it through. Glad you did not hit the dear. D4122 LYS.
Glad myself :) thank you for watching all the way, what did you think about the line outside the tunnels? :)
D4122LYS. Another very enjoyable journey. Thank you.
Thank you so much, and for showing your endurance reaching Lysaker on the route outside the tunnels :D
After the turmoil and stress of day to day living, these videos are a great way to relax and unwind. Thank you for them.
Glad you like them!

Is this your new route???? or relieving for someone else???? Wow 5 hours, looking forward to contiune this! Keep it up!
We cover several lines. Freight trains are not really bound in the same way passenger trains are.
great to be riding with you again! I see we're sitting on the left side of the cab, instead of on the right or in the middle. Really appreciate all the extra work you put in (chapterization etc). I'm now heading for Vennesla, with a nice long journey on the other side. Cheers!
Yes, on the RC like before, the controls are located on the left side. This because they're running on the left side in Sweden and this is a Swedish produced RC locomotive. The workhorse of ASEA (The Common Sweedish Electrical Corporation)
D4122 LYS I think GingerRail has some footage of the old Drammen Line, from back when he still could record it.
Possibly, yes 😊
Around 5:15, as the train passes through Alnabru yard, there are stacks of concrete tunnel lining segments just to the right, in the area where containers are stored. These segments are often used in rail transit projects. Do you know what project those are for? I also noticed signal D4122 LYS.
@@ians7980 probably going to the new tunnel in drammen
Nice night to accompagny you to Oslo but the summer night also beautiful on the Bergen Line? Thank you for the enchantment for each of your videos.
Thanks, glad you liked it.
I really enjoy watching your videos! There are so many beautiful views! 👍
Thank you!
